The lyricist

The person who writes the words the band exists to sing.

Craig L DeLue is the lyricist and creator behind Saber Jets. For Craig, the song begins with the words. The lyrics carry the story: relationships, desire, regret, obsession, aging, resilience, happiness, and the complicated distance between the life people have and the life they imagined.

After retiring from a career as a small business owner, Craig returned to writing. By his own admission he is “musically challenged,” and he does not create the music or vocals himself. Generative music tools gave him a way to write lyrics and turn them into fully realized songs. Craig brings the story; the technology brings the music and vocals. Many Saber Jets songs go through dozens of versions as he searches for the phrasing, arrangement, tempo, vocal character, and emotional delivery that make the lyric work.

Craig also shapes the broader Saber Jets world — the fictional lives of the band members, the imagery, the visual identity — while keeping the words and the stories at the center. He is also an author and screenwriter, including the memoir The Hidden Heartache, the novel Brian Nine, and the screenplay Between Friends. More at craigdelue.com.
